New Record for Passenger Traffic at BOI
For the third year in a row, the Boise Airport was the busiest it has ever been with nearly 5 million total passengers in 2024, up 5 percent over the previous record set in 2023.
The total number of passengers was 4,990,885 in 2024 compared to 4,752,757 in 2023. That’s an increase of more than 238,000 passengers or nearly as many people as live in Boise.
To accommodate the 81% increase in passengers in the last decade (2014-2024), the airport is in the process of a multiyear terminal expansion project to right size its facilities. On busy days, about 9,500 passengers go through the TSA checkpoint, and the current facilities are under-sized to meet this demand.
“The impressive growth we’ve seen in the Treasure Valley certainly correlates to an increased demand for air service,” said Rebecca Hupp, Boise Airport Director. “We expect traffic in 2025 to continue to be strong, which is why we’ve been working so hard to ensure the Boise Airport is prepared for that growth.”
The terminal expansion, known collectively as BOI Upgrade, includes:
- A 7-story rental car center, which is currently under construction and is expected to open in 2026.
- All new food, drink and retail options, along with a renovation for passenger favorite restaurant Bardenay, expected to be complete in 2025.
- A new concourse with up to 10 new gates, which will allow for increased flight frequency and may provide opportunities for new destinations. Construction of future Concourse A’s airport parking apron is expected to start construction this summer, with the concourse construction following in 2027.
Completed BOI Upgrade projects include:
- Creation of a new cell phone lot, which is more than three times larger than the previous cell phone waiting area. (2024)
- Construction of a 5-level employee garage with 700 spaces for shift-based employees (2024)
- Opening the East Garage, which added 1,100 public parking spaces a short walk from the terminal and doubled the close-in long-term parking capacity. (2023)
- Expansion of the TSA security checkpoint from six to seven lanes. (2023)
- Adding nearly 350 spaces in the Economy Parking Lot. (2023)
Along with the infrastructure improvements, the airport has also seen its airline partners grow their routes and add new nonstop destinations in the last year. Notably, Alaska Airlines added two new seasonal nonstop destinations this winter with the commencement of service to Orlando, Florida and Bozeman, Montana. American Airlines will restart its service to Chicago O’Hare International Airport in June, unlocking many one-stop destination opportunities on its network.
The Boise Airport is currently served by nine airlines offering 27 nonstop destinations.
