2022 Sets New Record for Passenger Traffic at the Boise Airport
The Boise Airport was the busiest it has ever been in 2022 with total passenger traffic coming in at nearly 4.5 million, up nine percent over the previous record set in 2019.
While many airports across the country are still recovering from the dip in air travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, statistics for BOI indicate a complete rebound. In fact, the Boise Airport was recently listed as the 10th fastest growing airport in the nation by the aviation industry publication Simple Flying.
“The explosive growth we’ve seen in the Treasure Valley certainly correlates to an increased demand for air service,” said Rebecca Hupp, Boise Airport Director. “We expect traffic in 2023 to continue to be strong, which is why we’ve been working so hard to ensure the Boise Airport is prepared for that growth.”
In anticipation of increased passenger traffic, and in an effort to grow in pace with its community, the Boise Airport is underway on a multiyear airport expansion plan, BOI Upgrade.
As part of this plan, the TSA security checkpoint was expanded to add an additional screening lane, growing from six to seven lanes. This additional lane is utilized during peak periods and increases passenger throughput, helping passengers make it through the security checkpoint faster. It also made room for CLEAR to begin operations last November, offering its expedited identity verification lanes.
Addressing airport parking needs is a top priority of BOI Upgrade. Last November the economy parking lot was expanded, increasing public parking by approximately 340 spaces and bringing total capacity for that lot to over 1,650 spaces. This expansion helps meet the demand of the traveling public while construction is finished on a new close-in public parking garage. Slated to open this summer, the five-level, 1,100 stall garage is being constructed to the east of the existing public garage and within easy walking distance to the terminal.
The airport is also currently constructing a five-level, 700 stall, employee parking garage near the corner of Wright St. and S. Owyhee St. and will soon break ground on a new rental car garage and lobby which will be within walking distance to the terminal.
BOI Upgrade will culminate in a brand-new concourse, Concourse A, that will extend to the west of the airport terminal. The new concourse will initially have six gates with the ability to expand up to 10 gates, and will also include restrooms, restaurants and retail stores. Construction is expected to begin on the new concourse in 2026.
